This time of year is one of our favorites to talk about. Fall colors in Sedona are, we think, some of the most glorious in the world. We’ve included scenic drives and hikes to catch the best views, some that we have mentioned previously, and a few new ones to add to your repertoire when you’re in town.

We promise, the contrast of crimson cliffs against golden cottonwoods and fiery maples will have you coming back for more. Whether you prefer a leisurely drive with sweeping views or a hike through trails blanketed in color, Sedona’s fall season (typically late September through early November) is all in. And we’re here for it.

Here’s your guide to the best scenic drives and hikes for fall color in Sedona.

Scenic Drives to Experience Sedona’s Autumn Splendor

1. Oak Creek Canyon Drive (Highway 89A)

Few routes in our beloved Arizona rival the beauty of Oak Creek Canyon in the fall. Take off from Uptown Sedona for this 14-mile drive to Flagstaff. The pretty route winds through lush canyons lined with cottonwoods, sycamores, and maples that burst into shades of gold, orange, and scarlet.

For the best views, start in Sedona and head north on Highway 89A. Pull over at Midgley Bridge for breathtaking vistas of Oak Creek far below, then continue toward Indian Gardens Café & Market—a favorite stop for coffee or a snack amid the colorful trees.

Best time to visit: Mid to late October, when higher-elevation trees are at their most foliage-fabulous.

2. Red Rock Loop Road

If you’re short on time but still want classic Sedona views with a splash of autumn color, Red Rock Loop Road is your best bet. This scenic byway meanders through the rolling foothills southwest of town, offering incredible perspectives of Cathedral Rock—the most photographed landmark in Sedona, and a site you can’t leave without seeing.

Golden cottonwoods line Oak Creek as it snakes through the valley below. Stop at Crescent Moon Picnic Site to capture reflections of Cathedral Rock mirrored in the water. It’s an especially magical sight framed by yellow foliage and crisp blue skies.

Best time to visit: Early to mid-October, when the cottonwoods along Oak Creek turn gold.

3. Boynton Canyon Road and Enchantment Resort Are

For a quieter drive that you won’t have to share with as many fellow leaf-peepers, head to Boynton Canyon in West Sedona. This road passes through red rock formations that glow even more vividly against the backdrop of fall foliage.

Best time to visit: Throughout October, though colors tend to linger into early November at this elevation.

Best Fall Hikes in Sedona

1. West Fork Trail (Oak Creek Canyon)

It’s popular, but with good reason. The West Fork Trail is a must-do for leaf seekers, with a peaceful, meandering creek flowing through a forested canyon filled with maples, aspens, and oaks that explode in brilliant hues each fall. Wear waterproof shoes for the creek crossings.

The trail is about 6.5 miles roundtrip, but even a shorter stroll offers plenty of photo-worthy moments. Arrive early—parking fills quickly during peak season.

Best time to visit: Mid to late October.

2. Cathedral Rock Trail

For those who prefer panoramic views to forested paths, Cathedral Rock Trail delivers. It’s short, steep, and big on red rock vistas. From up here, the sight of golden trees dotting the valley below is breathtaking. Go in the late afternoon for warm, glowing light and fewer crowds.

Best time to visit: Late October to early November for the best mix of fall color and mild hiking weather.

3. Huckaby Trail

Located conveniently close to town, Huckaby Trail offers a balanced mix of views and foliage. The 5-mile roundtrip trail descends toward Oak Creek, where golden cottonwoods line the banks. As you gain elevation, you’ll be rewarded with wide-open views of Sedona’s red rock formations painted against a tapestry of fall color.

Best time to visit: Mid to late October.

Tips for Visiting Sedona in the Fall

  • Arrive early: Parking lots at popular trailheads like West Fork fill up quickly.
  • Bring layers: Mornings and evenings can be cool, especially at higher elevations.
  • Stay hydrated: Even in cooler weather, Sedona’s dry climate can dehydrate you quickly.
  • Check color reports: Peak times can vary year to year depending on weather and rainfall.

Fall in Sedona is a visual feast, and we consider it our secret season. Crisp air, golden light, and the earthy scent of leaves and juniper make every moment spent outdoors unforgettable. Whether you’re winding through Oak Creek Canyon or watching the sunset over Cathedral Rock, Sedona’s autumn magic will leave you inspired long after the last leaf falls.
