Family Fun in Sedona, Arizona

July 11, 2024

Sedona boasts all the fun and special moments of which family memories are made. With nearly 2 million acres of national forest to play in, colorful red-rock formations to climb on, and a safe, unhurried lifestyle coupled with small-town charm, the oasis of Sedona is ready for your next family vacation. Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend your precious time together.

Take to the Slopes

Not for skiing, but for the summer Skyride! Once the skiers and snowboarders have left the San Francisco peaks behind for next year, the Arizona Snowbowl welcomes summer visitors to ride the Arizona Gondola to the upper slopes of Aggasiz Peak at 11,500 feet. Check out the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, more than 80 miles away, as well as the dormant volcano field surrounding Flagstaff. On weekends, kids can pepper the on-site Forest Service or National Park Service Roving Ranger with all their pressing nature questions.

Tube Down the Verde River

Have fun in the sun in a way that makes it easy to cool off ASAP. The whole family can float the river at their own pace, popping into the water whenever the spirit moves them. Kids five and older are welcome to join this fun adventure – complete with water cannons for even more giggles. Prefer to paddle? Inflatable kayaks are another way to cruise down the Verde.

Have an Off-Road Adventure

See Sedona’s prettiest scenery from an ATV (those age 15.5 and up can drive one, with learner’s permit or driver’s license, and kids 17 and younger must ride with an adult). You’ll spend three hours bumping and rolling along in the West Sedona Valley, where more than 40 movies have been filmed. You’ll cover about 20-30 miles along the base of the Red Rocks, stopping for incredible desert vista viewpoints.

Visit a Western Frontier Town

Gather the family and set off for Cottonwood, 20 minutes from Sedona, for the Blazin’ M Experience. Gates open at 5 pm for visitors to explore the real western saloon, bull riding, wagon rides, shopping, and more. Come hungry – the dinner bell rings at 6:30 pm, meaning it’s time to come to the table to feast on delicious chicken and ribs, prickly pear coleslaw, cowboy beans, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. After dessert, the Western Stage Show grabs your attention, a lively performance by Tex Wesly and his friends, accompanied by the Blazin’ M Ramblers Band playing western hits.
