Best Sunrise and Sunset Spots in Sedona: Where to Catch the Most Stunning Views

Whether you’re an early riser or a night owl, Sedona has no shortage of spots to catch the sunrise or sunset. We find there to be a different kind of magic at dawn, as the first rays of sunlight kiss the canyons, and the final moments before the sun sinks below the horizon and the desert comes alive in brilliant reds and oranges.

We’ve compiled our favorite sunrise and sunset vistas for you here. Want more inspiration? Just ask.

Sunrise Spots

Cathedral Rock

The short but steep hike up to Cathedral Rock is well worth it, even before you’ve had your first cup of coffee. Witness the soft morning light gradually illuminating the rugged rock formations, sometimes with a thin veil of mist over the lower terrain. It’s a mystical, peaceful scene – so much so we suggest just drinking it all in and skipping the photos (OK, maybe just a photo or two is enough).

Bell Rock

Bell Rock, another Sedona gem, is an easily accessible location for those looking to catch the sunrise without a challenging climb. The gentle trails surrounding this butte offer panoramic views of the horizon as the sun rises and casts its light across the valley.

Airport Mesa Overlook

If you’re craving a wide-open vantage point, the Airport Mesa Overlook is unbeatable for sunrise seekers. From up here, you’ll have a view of the entire Sedona region, aglow under the soft morning colors with canyons and peaks in the distance. Arrive early because this popular spot draws both travelers and locals alike.

Marg’s Draw Trail

Slip away from the crowds and set out on the moderately difficult Marg’s Draw Trail for a more secluded sunrise. This lesser-known gem provides a peaceful escape while offering glimpses of Snoopy Rock and other rock formations.

Sunset Spots

Red Rock Crossing

There’s an almost dreamlike quality to the sunsets viewed from Red Rock Crossing – this is the vista you’ve seen in postcards. Cathedral Rock is reflected in the waters of Oak Creek, creating a mirror-like effect when the light is just right.

Devil’s Bridge

Known as the largest natural sandstone arch in Sedona, this spot attracts hikers looking to exert a bit of effort for their sunset reward. You’ll find yourself standing on a breathtaking overlook as the sun sinks below the horizon, casting deep shadows and creating contrast against the fiery red rocks.

Broken Arrow Trail

Broken Arrow Trail offers an immersive sunset experience for off-road adventurers, either by foot or on a Jeep tour. The route promises uninterrupted views of Sedona’s most iconic formations as they glow under the fading light, with colors morphing into deeper ambers and purples.

Doe Mountain

Another short but steep one, Doe Mountain delivers with 360-degree views. From this vantage point, you’ll see the sun’s descent create a play of light that dances across canyons, mesas, and rolling hills.

Tips for Sunrise and Sunset Explorations

  1. Arrive Early: For both sunrise and sunset, arriving at least 30 minutes early ensures you’ll grab a prime spot and won’t miss the magic.
  2. Be Prepared: Wear sturdy shoes, pack a water bottle, and bring a flashlight or headlamp for hikes close to dawn or dusk.
  3. Check the Weather: Cloudy skies can enhance sunsets but may obscure the sun, so take a quick look at the local forecast.
  4. Photography Gear: Sunrises and sunsets in Sedona are a photographer’s dream. If you want great pictures, bring a stable tripod and a wide-angle lens to capture the broad beauty of the landscapes.
  5. Respect Nature: Sedona’s natural beauty is fragile and sacred to many communities. Stay on marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and pack out what you pack in to maintain this incredible environment for future visitors.
