Cooling Off in Sedona This Summer

We’re biased, we know, but we love an Arizona summer. During these months, Sedona’s red rock landscape glows with fiery brilliance. Despite the rising temperatures, there are plenty of ways to stay cool in our desert wonderland, from shady hikes to refreshing swims. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy all our beautiful region has to offer in the summer, without breaking (too much of) a sweat.

Hike Our Shady Trails

Our best hiking advice for summer in Sedona is to start your adventure early, when the heat has yet to take hold. You’ll weave through shaded canyons and juniper-covered forests that offer a natural refuge from the sun. We typically head to West Fork Trail for its babbling creek crossings, lush greenery, and shady alcoves, or the Boynton Canyon Trail for its refreshing breeze and panoramic views paired with a breezy ascent. The towering red rock walls along this path cast long shadows, granting a reprieve from the sun’s rays.

Take a Dip in Natural Pools

Get wet at Slide Rock State Park, where kids and adults alike giggle with glee as they splash, slide, and cool off in the invigorating waters of the creek. If you prefer your wild swimming a bit more private, we recommend Grasshopper Point along Oak Creek. It’s quieter than Slide Rock and tucked beneath a canopy of green. Jump into the swimming hole or just lounge by the water’s edge.

Take to the Water

If a dip isn’t enough, spend a whole day on the water on a Verde River kayaking trip.  Paddle past towering cottonwoods, keeping an eye out for the occasional heron swooping overhead and wildlife along the riverbanks. Or, don’t exert any effort at all and embark on a lazy tubing session downstream.

Savor Cool Dining Spots

Too warm for outdoor dining? Never! A summer day in Sedona wouldn’t be complete without an alfresco meal or two. Some restaurants even have misters in their shadiest spots for a most refreshing experience. We love Cress on Oak Creek, under the shade of sycamores – be sure to treat yourself to a chilled glass of Arizona wine.

Chase the Evening Glow

Sedona’s magic doesn’t dwindle with the sunset. Instead, this time of day is the most enchanting. Cooler temperatures roll in, and the red rocks start to dance with color right before your eyes. Cathedral Rock Reflecting Pools or Airport Mesa are among locals’ favorite sunset perches. End the day stargazing under Sedona’s famously dark skies. Designated as an International Dark Sky Community, Sedona’s nights are marked by brilliant constellations and the occasional shooting star.
