Hikers in Sedona find their happy place each fall, as the temperatures drop to a comfortable level for outdoor activities and the landscape bursts with even more vibrancy than usual. As guests at The Arabella, you’re perfectly positioned for some of Sedona’s best fall hikes, with a variety of trails that cater to all level of hiker, from seasoned trekker to casual nature walker. Here are a few of our favorites. Happy hiking!
Cathedral Rock Trail
Yes, it’s popular, but even if you prefer something off the beaten path, you have to check Cathedral Rock off your list. The relatively short, but steep trail – just 1.2 miles roundtrip – pays off big time at the top, when you’re greeted with panoramic views of Red Rock Country. We love going in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun hits the rocks just so for a dramatic glow-show of reds and oranges.
West Fork Trail
This is a favorite of local day hikers and visitors alike, nestled in convenient Oak Creek Canyon. The 6.9-mile roundtrip makes it excellent for a day hike, while still getting you back to town for dinner. The leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange this time of year. Wear waterproof shoes for the multiple creek crossings along the trail.
Devil’s Bridge Trail
For adrenaline-seekers, we love Devil’s Bridge Trail, a 4.2-mile roundtrip trek famous for its natural rock arch. The moderately challenging trail has a steep incline near the end, so save your energy bar for just before the climb. Walk out onto the bridge for an extra exciting view of the surrounding red rock landscape. If you have a high-clearance vehicle, we suggest taking off from the dry creek trailhead.
Bear Mountain Trail
Strenuous, but totally worth it, Bear Mountain Trail is a 5-mile roundtrip hike through diverse terrain, from rocky switchbacks to flat mesas. You’ll be richly rewarded with one of Sedona’s best views, stretching all the way to the San Francisco Peaks. Use caution if the weather has been wetter than normal, as some stretches of the hike can get slippery. And be sure to bring extra layers for the changing temperatures at higher elevations.
Bell Rock Pathway
Leisuerly and long, the Bell Rock Pathway is a beautiful 7.2-mile hike with stunning views of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butter. This is for hikers of all levels who simply want to spend the day in nature. Mountain bikers share the trail, so use caution. If you’d like to extend your hike, explore the connecting trails, like Little Horse. Bring a pair of binoculars along for the excellent birdwatching.
Always be sure to check trail conditions and prepare accordingly before hitting the trail. Respect nature and leave no trace to keep these beautiful trails pristine for future hikers. Later, we’d love to hear all about your adventures as we invite you to sit around our cozy firepit and sip a glass of local wine under the stars. Ready to visit? Check out our fall specials.
