Labor Day Weekend in Sedona: Your 3-Day Adventure Itinerary

Labor Day weekend marks the perfect transition from summer’s peak heat to autumn’s gentle embrace, and we may be biased, but we think it’s one of the most ideal times to experience Sedona’s red rock wonders.

With average highs of 84°F (29°C) and lows of 55°F (13°C), early September offers some of the year’s most comfortable hiking conditions. The crowds of summer begin to thin and the desert landscape shows hints of seasonal change that make this three-day weekend truly special. Here at the Arabella, a relaxed vibe sets over the property, allowing for true unwinding amidst our region’s natural beauty. You can head out for a day of adventure, then return to soak in our hot tubs and enjoy a glass of local wine.

We’ve put together a sample Labor Day itinerary that balances adventure with relaxation, outdoor exploration with cultural experiences, and must-see attractions with hidden gems. We hope you’ll find something that inspires you!

Day 1: Red Rock Immersion and Spiritual Connection

Morning: Cathedral Rock Sunrise Hike

Start your Sedona adventure with one of the most iconic and spiritually significant hikes in the region. Cathedral Rock, famous as one of Sedona’s four main vortex sites, offers a moderately challenging climb with extraordinary payoffs. The 1.5-mile round-trip hike features steep rock scrambles and incredible 360-degree views from the saddle. We always try to arrive at the trailhead by 6:30 AM to grab a parking spot and to experience sunrise from the rocks. The early morning light on red stone is remarkable.

Mid-Morning: Tlaquepaque Arts Village

After working up an appetite, head to Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village, a charming recreated Mexican colonial town filled with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Shop for authentic Native American jewelry, southwestern art, and handmade crafts. Stop for lunch at one of the village’s restaurants; favorites include El Rincon Restaurante Mexicano for authentic Mexican cuisine or Oak Creek Brewing Company for craft beer and casual fare.

Afternoon: Jeep Tour Adventure

It wouldn’t be a quintessential Sedona visit with a venture into the rugged backcountry on a guided Jeep tour. You’ll hit areas inaccessible by regular vehicles, such as the popular Broken Arrow Trail, where you’ll navigate steep rock faces and tight squeezes, or Diamondback Gulch for spectacular red rock formations and ancient ruins. Your guide will clue you in to local history, geology, and folklore that adds depth to the terrain you’re seeing.

Evening: Uptown Sedona Dining and Strolling

Conclude your first day with dinner in Uptown Sedona, where restaurants offer patios with red rock views. Consider Elote Cafe for innovative Mexican cuisine, The Hudson for upscale American fare, or Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill for Latin flavors with panoramic vistas. After dinner, stroll through Uptown’s galleries and shops, many of which stay open later on weekends.

Day 2: Water Adventures and Hidden Gems

Early Morning : West Fork Trail

Dedicate your second morning to one our most beloved and cooling hikes. West Fork Trail follows Oak Creek through a narrow canyon, offering consistent shade, multiple creek crossings, and some of the most photogenic scenery in Arizona. Hike as far as you feel like along the 7.2-mile trail; the beautiful scenery begins almost immediately. Fall colors often begin appearing in early September, adding golden cottonwoods and red maples to the already stunning landscape.

Afternoon: Slide Rock State Park

Cool off at Slide Rock State Park, where Oak Creek has carved natural water slides and swimming holes into smooth red sandstone. The water remains cool year-round (usually around 60-70°F). Bring water shoes for better traction on slippery rocks, and consider a waterproof phone case for photos. The park also features historic apple-packing buildings and heritage apple trees.

Late Afternoon: Airport Mesa for Sunset

Cap off your day’s adventures with sunset views from Airport Mesa, a relatively easy 3.5-mile loop trail offers panoramic views of Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and the entire Sedona valley. The mesa’s elevation provides cooling breezes, and multiple viewpoint options let you find the perfect sunset spot. This is also another vortex site, making it popular for meditation and reflection as day transitions to night.

Evening: Village of Oak Creek Dining

Explore Sedona’s southern area with dinner in Village of Oak Creek, where restaurants often offer more affordable options with equally stunning views. Try Cucina Rustica for Italian cuisine. The Village offers a more relaxed, local atmosphere compared to Uptown Sedona, with several shops and galleries to explore after dinner.

Day 3: Adventure and Relaxation Balance

Morning: Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte Loop

Start your final day with one of Sedona’s most iconic geological formations. The Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte Loop offers spectacular views of both formations while providing options for different fitness levels. You can hike the base loop for easier terrain or scramble up Bell Rock’s slopes for elevated perspectives. The 4-mile loop showcases Sedona’s diverse desert vegetation, from prickly pear cacti to juniper trees, while keeping the famous red rock formations as your constant companions. Bell Rock is another vortex site, and many visitors report feeling energized while climbing its red sandstone slopes.

Late Morning: Local Swimming Holes

Summer may be coming to a close, but mid-day remains hot in Sedona. Beat the heat at one of the region’s lesser-known swimming spots. Midgley Bridge offers deep pools perfect for swimming along with flat rock areas ideal for sunbathing and picnicking. Or,  explore Crescent Moon Ranch (Red Rock Crossing), where Oak Creek flows past Cathedral Rock, with picnic facilities, walking trails, and multiple creek access points for swimming or wading.

Afternoon: Spa Experience and Relaxation

Conclude your active weekend with rejuvenation at one of Sedona’s renowned spas. Many facilities offer treatments that incorporate local elements like red rock clay, desert botanicals, or vortex energy healing. We can help you find the spa that best matches your desires. If spa treatments aren’t your thing, consider visiting the local Crystal Shops for unique shopping, or explore the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park for quiet reflection and meditation.

Final Evening: Farewell Dinner and Stargazing

Choose a special restaurant for your farewell dinner, perhaps Mariposa for Latin-inspired cuisine with valley views, or Dahl & DiLuca for Italian food in an intimate setting. After dinner, consider stargazing from one of Sedona’s dark-sky locations, such as Airport Mesa or Schnebly Hill Road. The clear, dry air and reduced light pollution make Sedona ideal for astronomy enthusiasts.
